Michael Graetz: Energy Politics Is Lose-Lose
Four decades of energy policy gone wrong in the United States is largely explained by Congress elevating short-term political and parochial regional advantages over our nation's well-being. Although our government has enacted thousands of pages of energy legislation since the 1970s, it has never demanded that Americans pay a price that reflects the full costs of the energy they consume. This failure, alongside quite a few others, accounts for the state of affairs we face today. And guess what? Nothing has changed: The risks of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions pose a global existential threat. But Congress fiddles while coal and other fossil fuels continue to burn.
